At London Gatwick we have a partnership with our Passenger Operations team and a local charity called FreeShop. FreeShop was set up during Covid to help support local families experiencing hardships. They have a foodbank that is set up like a shop to bring dignity and choice to people requiring their services. Especially at this time of year, passengers can tend to overpack and end up with over-weight luggage. If people are unwilling to pay the excess baggage fees - well, you know the story!

Last Christmas the Passenger Ops Team were unhappy at the thought of having to throw away perfectly good food and toiletries/cosmetics - especially the Christmas treats. A team member came to me about this - I had just been made aware of FreeShop from another airport partnership. A match made in heaven! Now whenever Passenger Ops comes across excess food items & toiletries, they bring them to the chapel so I deliver them to FreeShop. Many passengers are relieved that their excess items are going to help others. Passengers Ops is happy not to bin items unnecessarily. FreeShop get a great range of products - some really weird & wonderful! The Chapel is supporting the airport and our local community.
